Diabetes Mellitus causes, symptoms, and prevention
Diabetes mellitus, one of the complicated diseases is increasing day by day among elders and children as well. This is a matter of concern and we must try to do things required to prevent it before it becomes severe. Glucose is an essential source of energy required to develop muscles, tissues and also provide fuel for the proper functioning of the brain. Diabetes leads to high blood sugar levels leading to chronic health problems.
It is a chronic metabolic disorder. It happens when carbohydrates and fats in our food do not get consumed fully. As a result, the level of glucose increases in our blood and when urine is tested, the amount of glucose is found high, which is a major diabetes symptom. Although the main reason for diabetes is still unknown, both males and females can suffer from this disease. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Patients suffering from this type are depended on insulin as in this case, their pancreases cannot produce insulin and there is a deficiency of it. So no oral treatments are useful. Somehow previous medical history is responsible for this type of diabetes like if there was any perilous infection or severe fever. In this case, family history may not be responsible. Obesity and an unhealthy diet can also be its reason. Kids are seen suffering from this disease due to the lack of physical activities.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Curing this type of diabetes is possible without insulin because in this case a small amount of insulin is present in their body. But the problem is that this insulin does not work properly and cannot control the level of glucose and that is why diabetes occurs. In type 2, obesity and the family epidemic can cause diabetes symptoms. But this occurs only in obese people and can be cured with regular exercise, limited intake of food and oral medications.
Important Tests For Diabetes Mellitus
- Blood sugar test in an empty stomach.
- Random blood test after eating food.
- Amount of Ketone bodies in urine test
When suffering from Diabetes, the immunity power of the patient can get lowered. So he or she must be very careful about it. If there is anybody in your family suffering from obesity after 10 years of age, then he or she must get a check-up every two years to ensure a diabetes-free life. High blood sugar for a long period can increase diabetes symptoms.
Other types of diabetes
Gestational diabetes – This type of diabetes may occur when one is pregnant but goes away after childbirth. Pregnant women over the age of 25 are at risk of this diabetes. If by this time blood sugar level is not controlled or treated then this may lead to complications in the mother as well as the baby.
Pre-diabetes – This type is not as complicated as there is high blood sugar but not high enough to cause diabetes. This may result in severe diabetes if it is not treated. Sugar gets build up in the bloodstream rather than in cells.
Diabetes symptoms are different for different types. For the pre-diabetes and type 2, there may not be any symptoms all the time. Type 1 is the most severe stage and can be diagnosed quickly. The following are some diabetes symptoms when you must visit your doctor.
- Frequent urination
- Increased rate of thirst
- Increased hunger
- Fatigue and blurred vision
- Sores taking time to get healed
- Repeated signs of infections in skin, gums or vagina.
How to prevent?
As prevention is better than cure so it is better to prevent Diabetes Mellitus before it develops into giants. Eating low-calorie foods, high fiber content diet, mild physical exercises, swimming, jogging or walking daily, losing weight, drinking water and enough rest can prevent it.
If left untreated then it may come up with severe and life-threatening complications as excess sugar in the blood may lead to cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney and eye damage, skin problems, depression, and Alzheimer’s diseases. So be careful to treat diabetes on time otherwise simple conditions can turn into serious problems.
